MaxSea Time Zero Explorer...User Testimony
MaxSea Time Zero Explorer
User Testimony
Keith Johnson
Game Fisherman, Port Stephens

JN Taylor the Australian distributor for Furuno, Maxsea and other leading brands of marine electronics was once again in 2009 the major sponsor for the largest offshore game fishing tournament  in the southern hemisphere – the 2009 NSW Riviera Interclub . The Interclub event runs over 10 days at the end of February each year and is as much a festival for life around the water as a fishing tournament. Hosted at the picturesque coastal holiday town of Port Stephens on the Central coast of New South Wales two hours drive North of Sydney, the local fishing grounds are world renowned for proving one of the most consistent fisheries for all species of Marlin.

As part of the JN Taylor sponsorship package the recently released Maxsea Time Zero Explorer software was offered as the major prize for the mid week Australian International Bill Fishing Tournament (AIBT).

The winner of this event and the very happy new owner of a Maxsea navigation system was Keith Johnson. Keith is an avid boater who actually resides in Port Stephens. Having owned many boats Keith had used many brands of navigation equipment although he had not previously used PC based navigation software. He was apprehensive initially of such products, believing it may be more complicated than traditional electronics – his experience once using the Maxsea Time Zero system on board his brand new 48’ Riviera luxury sports fisher proved to him this perception could hardly be further from the truth, his comment when asked on the user interface with Time Zero was “the MaxSea Time Zero is so simple to use. Everything is at your fingertips on the screen. Rarely do I need to go through menus even to plan a trip. It’s pretty much point and click.”

Keith is currently travelling on board his vessel with his family through the Whitsunday Islands, a group of some 70 isolated islands located off the Central Queensland coast. Navigating in this area requires careful planning and Keith now uses his Maxsea software every day. “The ability to enter waypoints, routes and even turn the navigation chart into 3D couldn’t be easier. The route planning is the easiest I’ve ever seen” Keith also mentioned the redraw speed, called Time Zero Chart Redraw, was super smooth and incredibly responsive. “I now use the MaxSea Software above my current electronics. The ability to change the course of a route planned is so simple I can do it while underway.”

Keith also uses the weather download feature finding it simple to use. “The weather? Easy. I use it all the time, almost every day in fact. I just connect to the internet which we do most days for email via our mobile connection. Then, start the MaxSea Software, click the Update tab, Weather Update and the software pretty much does the rest. I can select a time and date, by simply sliding the time and date bar on the bottom of the screen and see it play live across my screen overlaid on the chart. We now even plan day trips using it, deciding which side of islands would be more protected from prevailing winds before we go.”

Keith is looking forward to the 2010 sports fishing season kicking off in his home town when he returns from their current trip, intending to put to the test some of the more advanced features of his Time Zero software utilizing the current and sea surface downloads to further enhance his catch strike rate.

So whether cruising or sports fishing Maxsea Time Zero definitely adds another dimension to your boating experience and you don’t have to take our word for that – simply ask Keith should you see him on the water, in his words “It’s brilliant!”

The “Whisper” team finished first using MaxSea Time Zero
The “Whisper” team finished first in his class in the Marion to Bermuda ocean race using MaxSea Time Zero

Their awards were:
       1. Second in class A- scored by ORR system
       2. First in Fleet scored by IRC system (a new rating system coming into wide spread use in the USA)
       3. Adams trophy- first, fastest New England Boat

Sheeldon Brotman, remembers this race, and describes this experience:

“This is my 22nd race to Bermuda-- I knew that a well prepared sailboat and weather/ routing tactics would be extremely important. On the boat we installed a lap top inside a  desk under cover to prevent salt water damage, and then had remote wireless display and keyboard on top. The computer had the following applications: Time zero, weather net and standard Microsoft Applications, many raster charts. Weather files would be accessed by Iridium satellite phone.
After securing a favorable start out of Buzzards Bay the pace of the race slowed making only about 75 miles during the first day due to light winds. We downloaded grib files about three times a day and with each download ran routing solutions with Time Zero.
We ran several routing solutions on available grib files.  The Time Zero showed we would have to tack into Bermuda.  We anticipated very high seas, ultimately we had waves 20-25 feet in height. On account of this fact we went further from the Rhum line than suggested by Time Zero.
Although I think the software is very good... One cannot rely on it exclusively. The solutions need to be thoroughly analyzed with real knowledge of the present state of the seas.
Ultimately on Wednesday evening around 1700 hours we crossed the line at St. David's head.  A strange ending, there was no one in front of us and no boats followed us at the finish line.

We were pleased  to have Time Zero loaded on  board computers. We ran several solutions each day. We downloaded some of the Max Sea gribs, admittedly the level of data offered is extensive causing it to be lot via Iridium.  I found smaller area with fewer requests for information resulted in quicker more successful downloads.”

Scientist of the Sea Dragon using MaxSea Time Zero
In September 2009, the Sea Dragon (72 feet sailboat) will be leaving the United Kingdom for a trip of approximately 9 months; on board, a crew of scientists and hydrographs, all of them are passionate by the sea and concerned by its safeguarding. This steel hulled sailing vessel, initially designed in English shipyards for ocean races (Global Challenge Race), will take them along until California, making many stopovers onshore or in the islands.

The oceans study and safeguarding are the project core of this marine expedition, with the main finality of collecting data on water quality and the consequences of its degradation (evolution of acidity, plastics concentration, metals and other pollutants,…). A particular study will target those worrying “plastic islands” created by spirals currents which concentrate a significant number of waste coming from the whole world (see “garbage gyres »).

MaxSea is proud to join this project, by providing its last software MaxSea Time Zero to the crew, which can help them not only in their navigation, but also in their study work.
The target identification and tracking module (AIS) will be very helpful all along their tour and particularly during the Panama channel crossing, since it is the road of the 72 feet after having sailed in north of South America’s waters and the Caribbean.
Along its voyage to the West coast of the United States, and in addition to the studies on water quality, a study of the consequences of global warming on sea level rising will be carried out.
The final goal is to increase populations and governments’ awareness on the importance of ocean conservation, by contributing to the documentation of those phenomena, by giving useful tools and data for the scientists and by communicating on the solutions and behaviors we can all embrace. The Anglo-Americancrew will lead theses missions during its numerous stopovers; you will also be able to follow them via their Web site: http://panexplore.com/
All the MaxSea team wishes the Sea Dragon and its crew “un bon voyage”, and supports his project.
